Oosters! :D :D :D!
Aug. 27th, 2009 03:05 pmJust don't ask me how to pronounce it. O.o;;
Singaporeans - including the Oosters employees! xD! - all pronounce it the way a Belgian would say "oesters" (= the Dutch word for oysters! xD), but with a slightly longer "oe" than usual.
I'm still kind of convinced it's actually supposed to be pronounced more like the o in "home", rather than the one in "who"! Because, then instead of being a badly spelled Oesters where they don't even serve oysters (... they do have mussels, though!) the name would simply mean Eastern. Which makes a whole lot more sense than Oesters, IMHO.
ANYWAY! Despite the really confusing name, I have become quite fond of Oosters! It's Home Away From Home, you know? Err... well, it's a bit of a strange version of home. B-but, in an amusingly endearing kind of way.
I can't stress enough how awesome Oosters is when it comes to looking and feeling 100% Belgian. O.o; I really felt like, for a moment, I was back in Antwerp. Uhm, an air conditioned and much cleaner Antwerp. B-but, you know. Very Belgian.

I'm really not a big fan of these rickshaw-thingies. O.o; B-but, you have to admit this one looks mad awesome. *laughs!* I think that's why we decided to go to Suntec like this. Maybe. I can't remember now. I know I probably shouldn't have asked for a picture, but he was very friendly and honestly didn't seem to mind. IDK. I still feel a little bad about it, though.

I don't think I knew there was a second Oosters hidden away in Suntec City! If I had known, I probably would have planned for a dinner or lunch there... instead we kind of stumbled across it on a shopping trip and decided to have a drink and order some fries even though neither of us were particularly hungry. ^^;

If you ignore the little statue of Manneken Pis THIS PLACE REALLY LOOKS LIKE A LITTLE PART OF BELGIUM! WTF! The only thing that would be different if it really were a Belgian Brasserie is the windows. There's too much light. O.o; But, I like it better this way. (The other Oosters near Raffles is more authentic because it doesn't have as many natural light sources! xD)

The menu! ^^;
Okay, I have to admit... I'm not a big fan of the food. Their bitterballen are the weirdest things I have ever seen - but that may be because I've never had the home-made kind before. I didn't even know there was a home-made kind. *grin!* I've only tried some of their dishes that have mussels... and I can't really put my finger on what's wrong with them. They taste very, err, Chinese. Maybe it's because it's hard to get the mussels we use in Belgium over there...? Or maybe it's a different way of preparing them. IDK. I've always wanted to try and cook my version of Mosselen Natuur in Singapore. WE'LL SEE.
THEIR FRIES HOWEVER. THEIR FRIES TASTE LIKE HOME.

My only complaint is that they come in a FREAKING HUGE BOWL. I will never forget the sight of
petit_kitsune sitting at the other end of the table from me HIDDEN BEHIND A HUGE BOWL OF FRIES. *laughs!*

PERFECTION, OKAY. PERFECTION.

I don't drink beer! I'm just pretending this is my glass, but... it was my mother's! ;) *grin!* I think Oosters is mostly popular because of the huge amount of different beers they serve. (I can't imagine anyone visiting Oosters for their food. I just don't think Belgian food is something Singaporeans would like? O.o)

Obligatory picture with Manneken Pis. Ha.
I can't wait to go back to Oosters on a lazy afternoon just to order a big big big big big bowl of fries (+ mayo!) and sit there for about an hour. I mean, it would probably take about an hour to finish the whole bowl. AND THEN I WOULD NOT HAVE TO EAT AGAIN FOR AN ENTIRE WEEK. YESSSS. BELGIUM FTW.

Date: 2009-08-27 10:20 pm (UTC)I feel guilty about eating such unhealthy crap in Singapore, though! *laughs!* I have like a MILLION better options... but fries are in my blood. O.o; I can't not eat fries. THEY CALL OUT TO ME.

Date: 2009-08-28 02:24 pm (UTC)But I must say, the rest of the food they serve is not that great. Some of the meat dishes are a bit... bitter?? The fruit beer is nice though :)

Date: 2009-08-29 04:31 am (UTC)The rickshaw thing reminded me of when I was in San Diego. There were riskshaws all over the downtown area! I wanted to badly to ride in one. There was even one w/a female driver who had decked hers out in pink and Hello Kitty! I begged my husband to ride in it, but he said 'no'. I wish I had a photo of it at least. :\
