I do not enjoy cooking. HONESTLY. xD
Sep. 27th, 2007 04:06 pmWeeeeeell... I've posted about making mussels a few times already (I cooked some for
risax a while ago! xD) but I never really shared a recipe before. Last night
arrch told me he went out to eat mussels at a the Belgian Beer Cafe (in Australia! SO COOL!) with
nescienx and
ammonium - he must've really liked them because he asked me how much a mussel pot costs in Belgium after he got back! *beams!*
SO I REALLY WANT
arrch TO BE MAKE HIS OWN MUSSELS ONE DAY AND AND AND! I'm posting this silly recipe! xD
You don't even need a mussel pot... Any pot will do! ;)
Lin's Ingredients!
☆ MUSSELS! I think I used 2 or 3 kilo last night... O.o
★ Soup vegetables, but you can use any as long as it has onions and celery in it! xD
☆ Mussel herbs for flavour...
★ Mussel sauce (= mayonaise/mustard sauce mix!)
☆ FRENCH FRIES. <3
★ Pepper and salt! xD
Step One: CLEANING THE MUSSELS! xD
According to the website of Prins & Dingemanse (these are THE BEST mussels on earth!) all their mussels are already sufficiently cleaned before packaging. I usually just fill up the sink with cold water and dump the mussels in before splashing them about a little and rinsing them to get rid of any left over sand. ^^; It's not like it's hard work? xD You don't even have to remove the "beard" anymore or anything like that... Wooh!
Step Two: THE VEGETABLES & HERBS!
I use a lot of celery and onions along with a bag of soup vegetables. ^^;

For some reason we didn't use any celery last night and it tasted exactly the same as usual, though. xD Here's my mother cutting the onions to make this post less text-y! *laughs!*
When you've cut them all up nicely you should be able to fill the bottom of the pot you're going to use for your mussels about 1/4th? :) Melt some butter before adding all your vegetables and then let it cook for a few minutes... don't forget to add the mussel herbs!

That's how mine looked last night! xD After adding the herbs it looked like this... :)
I always use Carrefour's mussel herbs (they're in a glass jar unlike the packages in this picture!), but I forgot to take a picture of it before I threw the jar away last night! I can't find any pictures of it on Google either... Sorry! ^^;;
If you really can't find any mussel herbs in your country, you can always try replicating them? xD I've found a list of ingredients on this website: chervil, chive, parsley, onion, leek and paprika all mixed together! *LOVES BABELFISH!*
... or you could ask me very nicely and I can send some herbs your way! xD
Step Three: THE MUSSELS! xD
Now you're ready to add the mussels! YAY! :D :D :D

You simply fill the pot with mussels and let them cook for 10 to 15 minutes! ;) Easy, right? You can add half a glass of water to make it more soup-y (and it helps keep the vegetables from burning!) if you like. You need to "shake" the pot every 5 minutes to make sure nothing burns - just be sure to use a towel and don't hurt yourself! I usually add pepper right before the first "shake" and it really makes them taste nicer!
ALSO! Don't forget to start frying french fries when you add the mussels in! xD I keep forgetting, see... *dies!*
You'll know the mussels are ready when they are all open! It takes about 10 minutes, sometimes a little longer depending on the mussels or the size (I WAS MAKING THOSE AT THE SAME TIME! YOU TRY TAKING GOOD PICTURES WHILE COOKING THREE KILOS OF MUSSELS OKAY!) of your mussel pot... :)
Step Four: EATING IT!
You serve Belgian mussels with a nice mussel dip sauce and FRENCH FRIES! xD Eating them the Belgian ways means you use an empty mussel shell to pick out the mussels and eat them with your hands basically. *smirk!*
Edit: O.o Woah! THAT TOOK AGES TO TYPE! I really hope someone will appreciate this... *laughs!*

Date: 2007-09-27 04:28 pm (UTC)... last night was craptacular, though. Peter kept bitching from the moment I started cooking until all the way through dinner - including the dramatic exit from the table. Urgh. =/ I didn't get to ask my mother about Frankfurt, but maybe we can go see Holiday On Ice together? xD It's in Belgium!

Date: 2007-09-28 07:04 am (UTC)I couldn't help but wonder, maybe the mix had celeri and that's why it tasted as if there were some in it?
I usually make them "Moules Marinieres" style, with wine. :D Sometimes cream too, and of course onion etc, but I never tried with vegeteable soup.
Ah, delicious mussels. ;_; *has a craving now* XD
How I currently feel. XD XD

Date: 2007-09-28 12:11 pm (UTC)Ooh! I'm not good enough of a cook to be able to taste the celery, but I just found that it tasted pretty much the same as it always did.. maybe even better with the soup veggies than just onions and celery? xD I really love my veggies, so maybe this is just me!
I WANT TO TRY WITH WHITE WINE NEXT TIME! xDD I've only just started getting comfortable with making mussels so I didn't try anything cool like that yet. ;)
AWWWWWWW THAT PICTURE IS SO CUTE! *feeds mussels!*

Date: 2007-09-28 09:49 pm (UTC)My husband and most of his family don't like sea food, so most of the time I'm not motivated to cook it just for myself. ^^; So I end up spending a while without my beloved sea-foodies. ;-; *will get mussels some time soon though, has huge craving now* XD
*cheers for the trying with wine too* :D
And thanks~! X3 *joins chibi-Kanon in the eating of virtual mussels* XD<3
I colored it after all. :D
